Phosphorus Chemicals

OVERVIEW

Varsal’s Phosphorous chemical products are made at Varsal ISO, GMP and ChemStewards® compliant facilities.

We custom manufacture other phosphorous chemicals upon request.  We also supply specially formulated electroless nickel plating chemicals.

Sodium Hypophosphite, Monohydrate

  • Other names: sodium hypo
  • Appearance: White crystalline powder
  • Molecular weight: 105.99
  • CAS#: 10039-56-2

Used in electroless nickel plating applications, where a durable nickel-phosphorus film coats objects with irregular surfaces, such as in avionics, aviation and in oilfields.

Sodium hypo is also used in food additive applications as a stabilizer or emulsifier (e.g. cod-liver oil emulsions).

Varsal’s sodium hypo has extremely high purity with low residual impurities, leading to maximal yield and product quality for Varsal’s customers.

Hypophosphorus Acid (HPA)

  • Other names: Phosphinic Acid
  • Molecular weight: 66.00
  • Appearance: clear, colorless liquid
  • CAS#: 6303-21-5

HPA is a powerful reducing agent with a wide variety of uses including:

Pharmaceutical: as a stimulant in API production

Industrial: as a wetting, dispersing, or emulsifying agent in electroplating, as a reducing agent, an antioxidant, as a decolorizing and color stabilization agent, as a neutralizing monobasic acid, and as a polymerization (polycondensation) catalyst

Textiles: as a bleaching agent, and for producing hypophosphite salts used in synthetic fibers as wetting, dispersing, emulsifying and anti-static agents

Varsal’s HPA is produced from an ion-exchange process that treat negative ions like Chloride and Sulfite, resulting in a high quality, high purity product with very low impurity content. We can control the impurities to customer-specified levels.

Phosphorus Pentoxide

  • Other names: Phosphoric Anhydride, Phosphorus (V) Oxide
  • Molecular weight: 141.94
  • Appearance: White powder
  • CAS#: 1314-56-3

Used in various applications including as a strong dehydrating/condensing agent, for organic synthesis routes in pharmaceuticals and pesticides, for glass manufacture, and as a starting material for surfactants and extraction agents.

Nickel Hypophosphite, Hexahydrate

  • Other names:  I14-4713
  • Molecular weight: 296.67
  • Appearance: Light green crystalline powder
  • CAS#: 13477-97-9

Used as an intermediate.

  • Industrial

Varsal’s nickel hypophosphite is produced from a special process and has minimal impurities.

Tetrakis (Hydroxymethyl) Phosphonium Sulfate (THPS)

  • Other names:  N/A
  • Molecular weight: 406.28
  • Appearance: clear, colorless liquid
  • CAS#: 55566-30-8

Used as a corrosion inhibitor and active ingredient for biocide formulations. THPS has low toxicity, is highly stable, easily dissolvable in water, and degrades quickly into a non-toxic substance.

  • Water treatment
  • Paper and Packaging

Varsal’s THPS is produced from a purified waste stream resulting in an economical, high quality product.

Tetrakis (Hydroxymethyl) Phosphonium Chloride (THPC)

  • Other names: N/A
  • Molecular weight: 190.56
  • Appearance: Yellow liquid
  • CAS#: 124-64-1

Used as a precursor in the production of fire-retardant materials, and as a microbiocide and disinfectant in water systems and textiles.

  • Industrial
  • Water treatment
  • Textiles

Varsal’s THPC has extremely high purity with low residual impurities, leading to maximal yield and product quality for Varsal’s customers.

2-Phosphonobutane-1,2,4-tricarboxylic acid (PBTC)

  • Other names: Phosphonobutane Tricarboxylic Acid
  • Molecular weight: 270.13
  • Appearance: Colorless to light yellow liquid
  • CAS#: 37971-36-1

PBTC has low concentrations of phosphorus, and has structural features of both phosphoric acid and carboxylic acid group, which enable its excellent scale and corrosion inhibition properties (esp. at high temperature). PBTC can also improve zinc salt solubility, and furthermore has good chlorine oxidation tolerance and good composite synergy.

PBTC is a very effective scale inhibitor used in various industrial applications, and is cost-effective compared to standard Phosphonates (e.g. HEDP/ATMP). It has higher performance properties, mainly due to superior stability to chlorine, bleach and bromine. In cooling water PBTC performs well at high pH or temperatures. It further shows high effectiveness in highly alkaline solutions such as industrial cleaners.

PBTC is usually used together with zinc salt, copolymer, organophosphines, imidazole and other similar chemicals.

Representative applications include use in cooling water systems / industrial water treatment, industrial detergents, disinfectants, liquid dishwashing concentrates, metal surface treatment (e.g. steel corrosion inhibitor), concrete retardant, and as a sequestering agent in textile auxiliaries.
