Chemicals - Applications |

| Lubricants/Oil |
| Market Overview |
| The markets to be addressed in this section include
industrial and automotive lubrication, oil production and processing,
metalworking, and corrosion protection/metal passivation. Key product
offerings for these areas would include lithium hydroxide, calcium
nitrite, methane sulfonic acid (MSA), phosphate esters and amines,
dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) and specialty esters. |
| Products/Applications |
| Lubrication |
Lithium Hydroxide- can be used to make a variety of lithium-based
greases and lubricant products.
MSA- is utilized as a gel preventative during polymerization to produce
pour point depressants and viscosity improvers.
Phosphate amines- is used as additives in extreme pressure systems.
Phosphate and specialty esters- for use in various machine and automotive
lubricant and corrosion protection applications. |
| Oil Production/Processing |
MSA lead salts, Butyl/Na acetate, DMDS, Dimethyl sulfide, aspartic
acid/ester- used in aqueous drilling fluids
MSA- to remove ethylene and secondary olefins from an olefin stream
DMDS- to passivate steam cracker furnaces
DMDS- for refinery catalyst conditioning
Sodium acetate - used as a buffer in drilling mud

| Corrosion protection/passivation |
Specialty phosphate esters- Varsal has the capability
to custom produce select esters that can provide enhanced corrosion
protection.
Dicyclohexylamine- corrosion inhibitor and antioxidant
Calcium nitrite- used as a passivating agent for reinforcing bar in
concrete admixes systems. Calcium nitrite inhibits corrosion by reacting
with ferrous ions at rebar level to form a stable passive film of
ferric oxide (Fe2O3) on the reinforcement steel,
around the anode according to the following:
Fe+++ 2HO- + 2NO2 -> 2NO=Fe2O3+H2O
Calcium Nitrite promotes the stabilization of the passivating layer
of oxide normally found on the reinforcing steel in concrete. It's
protective mechanism works through repairing the defects that usually
occur in the oxide structure, thus preventing chloride ions from penetrating
the pure ion of the metal.
See this paper for
more information on the effects with steel in concrete.
